January 2011 - Shopping: Kawaii

So what is "Kawaii". It is literally translated as "lovability", "cuteness" or "adorableness". Since the 1970s it has become a prominent aspect of Japanese popular culture, entertainment, clothing, food, toys, personal appearance, behavior, and mannerisms. (Do you see "Hello Kitty" in the wedding gown?)

Some of these elements can be seen in the following:
1.Pikachu, a character from Pokémon, adorns the side of three All Nippon Airways passenger jets.
2. All 47 prefectures have cute mascot characters
3. Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty and other similarly cute characters run the Sanrio Puroland theme park in Tokyo.
4. Cute can be also used to describe a specific fashion sense[8][9] of an individual, and generally includes clothing that appears to be made for young children, apart from the size, or clothing that accentuates the cuteness of the individual wearing the clothing. Ruffles and pastel colors are commonly (but not always) featured, and accessories often include toys or bags featuring anime characters. See Japanese Street Fashion.

This is the link to "All Things Kawaii". There are over 500 sites listed here.

Some of my favorites:
acrylicana - Artists web site of cute illustrations and art. She sells handmade jewelry, accessories and more. I love her necklaces.

Poupee girl - create a fashionable avatar and post photos of clothes and accessories to share with others.

My Asian Fashion - A whole community for those who love Asian fashion

pixel girl presents - All sort of pretty icons and images to use on your desktop and mobile phone. Iphone images for us girly girls!

Another fun thing to do is to google "Kawaii TV". the program covers everything from fashion to culture in Tokyo. There are lots of segments available online
